Considering its reduced price, its a nice game for what you pay for....
Nice game! When I first played this game I was annoyed to find there was no tutorial what so ever. Having played Advanced Wars before for GBA, and this being a turn based strategy game, my instincts quickly kicked in and I eventually grasped the basic idea of how things worked. For those who say they purchased it for $3, that could be a bit much. For a while now, this app has been fluctuating between $1 and free. At worst, this is likely worth $1 to many of you. Im sure its been going to free so the dev can cross promote the 2 sequels that are already out.
Im told this game moreso resembles Final Fantasy Tactics or Tactics Ogre series. While Ive never played those, Ive seen screenshots of both to agree with that. The biggest change from Advanced Wars to this was each side takes turns moving one unit at a time, not everything. You start off with the ability to use 2 of the 8 unit types, but once you do enough leveling up of the lesser types of units to unlock the better unit types, youll be using those better ones almost exclusively, and pumping levels into them instead since even though the lesser units take up less "draft points", the better ones are simply worth it, especially when leveled up
I am currently on level 68, but there seems to decent variety given the games pricepoint. The levels are played across several types of terrain (e.g. uphill mountain slope, going up to the steps and leading to the roof of a house, green fieds which slope upwards gently), and every now and then, a chessboard for actual map. Theres no storyline, class changing, nor items to equip, but I consider that a tradeoff. It does make the game eaiser and quicker to jump into and play at the cost of some game complexity and depth. It turns out the descpription of the game here on Itunes already has most of the instructions needed to play the game, but again, I still wish these text instructions were included in-game. Many of the levels can get repetitive, but as you beat them 5 or 10 at a time, you see new characters with unique abilities (e.g. Lilith uses an orb to "mind control" one of your units; Chain Slave can teleport up to 3 spots from one place to another, so he can actually "move up cliffs" as if they were passable on foot.)
